Keep Los Angeles neighborhood children fed during government shutdown
The federal shutdown that began on Oct. 1,2025, has suspended SNAP (food stamp) benefits – leaving 420,000 L.A. County children and millions nationwide without support for November. This is the first time in U.S. history that SNAP benefits are halted because of a government shutdown. With 70% of California’s recipients being families with kids, local food banks are stretched thin and need help now.
We know times might be tough, but many of us still have an extra tin of food sitting around. This is your chance to put it to good use and help a kid eat this week – without even having to leave the house.
How You've Helped Already
On Monday October the 27th we posted on instagram asking community members to Set Dood Out: Leave unopened and unexpired food out by your front door by 10 AM on Sat. Nov. 1st. Write “FOOD DRIVE”on the bag/box. All donations will go directly to the Westside Food Bank and Hollywood Food Coalition ❣️
As of today, Thursday afternoon, we have over 300 pick-ups ! WOW!
Our Current Ask: Volunteer Drivers!
In order to make sure all 300+ pick ups happen Nov. 1st. - we need more volunteers/drivers! Please sign up for November 1st at 10am.
Can't volunteer this weekend or don't live in LA? Sharing helps! Boost our ask via social media channels and your own personal networks.
Neighborhood Food Drive LA: Who we are?
We’re a volunteer group of organizers, business owners, and civic professionals in Los Angeles who came together when the federal shutdown meant local children and families would lose food assistance. We come from places like Young People to the Front, the City of L.A., MTV, and local political campaigns. Food donations will go directly to the Westside Food Bank and Hollywood Food Coalition.
What happens after November 1st?
Our team of volunteers are actively trying to figure out how to continue Neighborhood Food Drive LA past Nov 1st.
Young People to the Front HQ will be opening its doors to donation drop-offs starting Nov 3rd. Please see image below for items that can be dropped off. To schedule a drop off at the HQ please reach out to nbhdfooddrivela@gmail.com.
We hope to do another Neighborhood Food Drive with pick-ups in a few weeks. So keep an eye out on our instagram for updates!
